 Combatting Violence On Television

In Indonesia (as apparently in many countries) most new learning technologies tend to follow the same path as their predecessors. Each one of them is seen as a brilliant new technological quick-fix to a learning/teaching issue, and will make life easier for teachers and institutions. This is the impression given (naturally) by those who have vested interests in the technology (the marketers). But what is the reality? Too often the reality is that teachers don't have the time nor the institutional support to maximize the application of technology. For instance, black/whiteboards are often in poor condition and aren't changed, basic teaching aids are still insufficient in most schools, there are few overhead projectors in schools and they are are often unserviceable, cassette and CD players are also short in supply and again often unserviceable, film and video are very rarely used (where they are available), language laboratories are not used effectively or are unserviceable, etc. Often there are no materials to use.

Currently access to the Internet is what the Indonesian MoE claims to be a main education issue in Indonesia. We believe that some access to the Internet is important because our students do need experience using it, but not necessarily in school, because there is very little learning material or information of value in Indonesian language on the Internet. If students aren't reasonably fluent, as is the case, or don't understand English at all the Internet is almost useless as a learning tool and is mainly just used for e-mail communications and entertainment. Usually the Internet is used by students for chatting, e-mail, matchmaking, etc. Visit your local Warnet (Internet Cafe), Mall or Plaza after 1.30pm and see for yourself what our students are accessing. Where is the educational value? Is Internet the solution?
BTW: Please be careful with our new and expensive "Jaringan ICT Pendidikan Jardiknas" ICT Education Network!.
Read the SEAMEO IT Development Plan (SEAMEO.Net). Planning is excellent, isn't it? I was an Official Observer at the SEAMEO Conference in Thailand.
What is the situation now? Try: http://SEAMEO.Net, yes, the domain belongs to me!

The Evolution of the Technology-Based Learning Environment
Malaysian schools have at various points in time been introduced to various educational technology innovations. In the early days there was Radio Pendidikan (Educational Radio) and schools were provided with cassette recorders to record these programmes. Some schools were given a few units of overhead projectors. When TV began in Malaysia, TV Pendidikan (Educational TV) was introduced and schools also acquired the Video Cassette Recorder (VCR), to enable them to record TV Pendidikan programmes so they might be shown at a convenient time. What has happened to all these innovative hardware? Are teachers using them in the classroom? WHY NOT? Today we have computers, CD ROMS and the internet. Will they meet the same fate like earlier technological innovations in our schools?

 Education Technology - Dichotomy?
We believe that the ongoing development of Public Education Telvision, whereby it becomes even more effective, interactive, and enjoyable, may well achieve wider public appeal and perhaps begin to make inroads into some of the current social issues associated with public television programming.
